Did you know that the idea for Fathers Day came from Mothers Day? In the US in 1909 a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was in church listening to a sermon on Mothers Day. She had been raised by her father and the sermon made her think what a selfless and caring man he was and how good he had been to her and how fitting it would be to have a day to honour and celebrate fathers. The first Fathers Day was held in the USA in Spokane, Washington in 1910. It took another 16 years before a national American Fathers Day movement began and it didn’t become official until 1956. So, it’s relatively new!
